STEEPLECHASE [2] (An Léimrás). AKA and see "Carrigaline," "It's a Hard Road to Travel," "Lad Among the Spriggens (The)," “Milestone (2) (The),” "Rocks of Cashel (1) (The)." Irish, Reel. C Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). One part (O'Neill): AABB (Breathnach, Flaherty): AA’BB’ (Taylor/Tweed). The melody was famously recorded in New York for Crown Records by south County Sligo born fiddlers Paddy Killoran (1904-1965) and Paddy Sweeney (1894-1974), in a medley following “Ah, Surely” in the early 1930’s. O'Neill printed the tune in his Music of Ireland (1903) as "Carrigaline" and Tommy People's recorded it as "It's a Hard Road to Travel." Breathnach (CRÉ III) gives “The Boys of 25” as an alternate title, however, this appears to be a mistake, as “Boys of Twenty Five” is another title for the melody “Ah Surely (1)”, the other tune in the Killoran/Sweeney medley. A version of the tune was recorded in Québec by French-Canadian fiddler Guy Bouchard.
