PHOENIX [1], THE. English, Country Dance Tune (2/2 time). F Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AB (Sharp): AABB (Fleming-Williams, Raven). The tune dates to at least 1670 when it was published with dance directions in biography:John Playford's (1623-1687) Dancing Master, 4th edition. It may have been associated with a later-century revival of Thomas Middleton Jacobean play The Phoenix [1], a city comedy written c. 1603-4.
