MANSELL, THE. AKA - "Mansel, The." English, Country Dance Tune (cut time). G Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AB. The melody was first published by Henry Playford in his Dancing Master, 11th edition (1701, p. 308), and was retained in the long-running Dancing Master series through the 18th and final edition of 1728 (then published by John Young, heir to the Playford publishing conerns). It was also published by John Walsh in his Compleat Country Dancing Master, editions of 1719, 1731 and 1754. It was included in the 1694 music manuscript collection of Northumbrian musician Henry Atkinson (Morpeth) under the generically-titled "Scotch Tune (1) (A)." Nearly a century later it was entered into the 1790 music copybook collection of London musician Thomas Hammersley as "Mansill, or My Loveing Cuzen."
