LOCH LOMOND REEL, THE. Canadian, Reel. Canada, Cape Breton. B Flat Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). Composed by Halifax, Nova Scotia, fiddler Elmer Briand (1922-1992). Briand was originally from L’Ardoise, Richmond County, Cape Breton, where he started fiddling at the age of 12. He was a veteran of the Merchant Marine in World War II, and after the war returned home to play on Halifax, Nova Scotia, radio stations CHNS and CJCH. During this time he met Canadian fiddle great Don Messer, who had Briand make numerous guest appearances on his radio and television shows. Briand also composed several tunes for Messer's band.
