BLACK NAG [2], THE. English, Jig and Country Dance Tune (6/8 time). D Minor (Barnes, Karpeles, Raven, Sharp, Spandaro): A Minor (Barber, Brody, Carlin). Standard tuning (fiddle). ABB (Sharp): AABB (most versions). The tune was first published in 1657 by Playford (see "Black Nag (1) (The)"). The melody has gained some currency in modern times in American countra dance cirles where as a jig it is the vehicle for a set dance for three couples, as well retaining popularity with English country dance enthusiasts.
