"All the gray meal's gone" was originally entered into the c. 1752 music manuscript of Northumbrian musician John Smith. John Stokoe obtained the ms. in the latter 19th century from Lewis Proudlock of Longhorsley, Morpeth, who had received the book around 1881 from a Mr. Fish of Angerton, who had bought it at a farm sale amongst some old books. Unfortunately, Smith's manuscript collection is now lost, save for 20 tunes that Stokoe copied from it, including the earliest copy extent of "Keel Row (The)." Stokoe's copy was retained by the Melodies Committee of the Newcastle Antiquarian Society, which compiled local Newcastle tunes from 1857-1887.
