ABIGAIL JUDGE [1]. AKA and see "Mrs. Judge." Irish, March or Air (4/4 time). G Minor (most versions): B Minor (Clinton). Standard tuning (fiddle). AB. Composed by blind Irish harper Turlough O'Carolan (1670-1738). The melody is married to a jig in Bunting's General Collection of Ancient Irish Music under two separate titles, "Madam Judge" and "Planxty Judge" (the later being the jig). The air (or first part) was transcribed by Bunting from the playing of harper Daniel Black, while the jig is from harper Hugh Higgins. Donal O'Sullivan (Carolan, the Life and Times of an Irish Harper, 1958) identifies the person of the title as the wife of Thomas Judge of Grangebeg, County Westmeath, who she married in 1707 (see Carolan's tune for him, entitled "Thomas Judge/Carolan's Frolic). A version of the first part of the tune is in John Mulholland's Ancient Irish Airs [1] (Belfast, 1810). Edinburgh publisher George Thompson printed the tune in his Original Irish Airs, vol. ii (1816, p. 101).
