Composed by Aberdeenshire fiddler-composer biography:Alexander Walker (b. 1819) in honor of Lieutenant Colonel Alexander Penrose Gordon-Cumming (1816-1866), 3rd Baronet of Altyre, Moray, whose wife was Anne Pitcairn née Campbell (died 1888). His brother was the big-game hunter Roualeyn George Gordon-Cumming, and the travel writer Constance Gordon-Cumming was his sister. Sir Alexander gained the rank of Captain in the service of the 4th Light Dragoons and 71st Lught Infantry, and gained the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel in the service of the Elgin Volunteers.
